Eric and Claire: A Complicated Remodel
A short scene from screenwriting class about conflict and desire

I’m insanely productive with NaNoWriMo as I write about my dysfunctional, spicy life. (Said to self: “Get in, loser. Let’s learn about how you enable toxic people.”) In the meantime, enjoy this cute screenwriting assignment from my grad school days. The assignment was to write a short scene showcasing conflict. Apparently, if writing fiction (not my normal genre), I put a lot of myself in the female lead.
I was so intimidated by screenwriting class but enjoyed the challenge of this new form. We completed a number of short scene assignments which culminated in a short film script at the end of the semester. I can’t remember what scriptwriting software I used, but there are so many great options that handle the tedious formatting for you. I highly recommend The Hollywood Standard by Christopher Riley. It’s a helpful resource without overwhelming the novice screenwriter.
Have you ventured in a form or genre of writing that is out of your norm? Did it help inspire you or tempt you to never write again?
