Here we go again. My favorites that made me type or jot down. My notables that caused me to flinch or stare off in a pensive fog. The quirky things that sparked inspiration. Once per month seemed pretty sad, so enjoy my second list containing what made me crack and ache in many ways.
Check out my first edition of “The Fracture” here.
The app(s)... not to be an obligatory category
So I ventured back on Instagram after an over two-year hiatus.
I
Just
Don’t
Know.
It doesn’t have that sweet addictive flavor it once did. Probably a good thing. We’ll see how it goes. I don’t intend on following many people because seeing “You’re All Caught Up” in my feed makes me feel quite mature. Adding music to posts is a draw for me though. If you’re a fan of my Substack newsletter, then you can figure out my handle.
Though my tweets are still protected (the job hunt), I made my way back to Twit–I mean, X. (Blech.) I missed it so much. So many fun people, well-equipped for witty banter. Swoon.
Google’s Recorder app was that hidden gem in the junk drawer of my phone. I used it a few times this week for desperate note taking. It automatically transcribes (needs some work), and it comes up with a title based on what your note is about.
The New York Times Games app has added something fun and aggravating… Connections! It’s my new go-to after Wordle.
In order to get in touch with my Cuban roots, I’m kicking ass with Duolingo. “Lazy” (perezoso) is the app’s favorite adjective which subconsciously makes me gravitate back to practicing my Spanish. Nice job, green birdie… or pajaro verde.
The music, an obligatory category in every “The Fracture” post
In my pursuit to name a song from long ago, I asked my husband to bust out our collection of burned CDs. (Thank goodness for Blu-ray players.) Didn’t figure out the song, but remember Everything But The Girl? They had that sad song everyone liked. This one, rediscovered on one of my CDs, is better. It reminds me of shopping at an outlet mall on vacation as a teen. Where to next… Banana Republic or Esprit?
As always, respect the specific remix.
“Corcovado” (Knee Deep Remix/Ben Watt Vocal Re-Edit) - Everything But The Girl
This oldie but goodie from Bomba Estereo came back to me via Valeria, an English-dubbed Netflix series about a group of friends weaving their way through sex and relationships in Madrid. The lead character is a struggling writer, of course.
“Fuego” - Bomba Estereo (You know their hit “Soy Yo,” I promise.)
The random (also obligatory)
I actually got started on real work for my manuscript. I have a lot of ideas I’m trying to sort, but I’m patiently dissecting. I’m finding going back and forth between my intro and chapter one as oddly productive.
Today was the first day I wore jeans in three months. This seems like a notable accomplishment, but it really shows how I’m desperate for accolades.
My hidden children had a great start to the school year. It’s fun to see them embark on new journeys in high school, middle school, and elementary. Zucchini bread, Pez dispenser, blackberry bush accident, boba tea earrings. That’s all you get. No context.
Trying to figure out the right amount of incognito mode as I (hopefully) wrap up my job hunt. People are apparently scared of bold women discovering their sensuality and sexual needs.
Remember when I mentioned the creepy doctor in the last “The Fracture”? I finally got my big girl pants on and submitted feedback about the appointment that left me feeling humiliated. I even filled out the optional name and phone number fields.
Silence.
That’s a shame. We could have handled it like adults, but now I might just have to write about it.
