The Fracture: March 2024, Part 1
Do Not Disturb 24/7, NPR's Tiny Desk Concert, and where to find erotic art festival attire
The links
The people say Gen Z leaves their phones on Do Not Disturb 24/7. I actually do this, too. I try to remember to turn the feature off after work, but that usually doesn’t happen. For me, it isn’t about anxiety; I just don’t want to be a Pavlov’s dog to my phone.
I’m not going to define what a tradwife is. (Fine, I’ll let Google do it.) This boredpanda article brings up a noticeable discrepancy in their wholesome, polished image:
“Have you ever asked yourself why it is that tradwives and other conservative female influencers who promote traditional gender roles have all the time in the world to make cereal from scratch, but somehow never seem to record themselves doing essential domestic labor like vacuuming, trying to get a particularly nasty stain out of a shirt or scrubbing a toilet when they are performing labor in these videos?”
Can we not have nice things anymore—like songs that make our hearts yearn for toxic relationships?! Gosh. 😒 But seriously, PsyPost brings attention to a startling fact: “A study published in the Psychology of Music reveals that more than 86% of popular songs about relationships depict an insecure style of romantic attachment, including avoidant, anxious and fearful attachment.”
In my opinion, this is still the best love song. ❤️ (Whatever happened to him?)
The music
So that article I literally just referenced about the prevalence of unhealthy attachment styles in popular music? Let’s ignore that for a sec.
I was introduced to Benee, the New Zealand singer-songwriter, during the pandemic with her fun song “Supalonely.” (A lot of Billie Eilish vibes.) Well, let’s get “Soaked.” (I almost miss feeling this way as referenced in this Instagram post.)
Soaked up in my brain
For another day
These things I'm tryna say get drenched and swept away that's the truth
Soaked up in my brain
Don't know what to say
Something about you boy you soak up half my brain, yes you do
Ooh, ooh, something about you boy you soak up half my brain
Moving on in musical nonsense…
As I celebrate my 41st birthday on St. Patrick’s Day, I need me some jams from every older millennial mom’s favorite one-person band, Tame Impala.
I hate how catchy his stuff is, but this one was on repeat this busy week. I love peppy songs with sad lyrics. They’re just so funny to me. So oxymoronic. Enjoy “No Choice” while doing some laundry.
It doesn't matter if I want to go somewhere new
At the end of the day, I have no choice
It wouldn't matter that I had to break it with you
Going over and over brings no joy
NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert has featured popular and not-as-known artists in their tiny office since 2008. The production has received some flak for moving away from its more indie focus, but this short video gives a brief history of the variety of music and opportunity it has given to some musicians.
Justin Timberlake (do we still like him?) recently performed. It was good, I suppose, but I was really excited for March 11’s edition which featured 311, one of my favorite bands from high school. Nick Hexum is still beautiful.
The art
Originally introduced to the beautiful Elizabeth Hope on Twitter, I now follow her on Instagram where she’s big on Coffee Fridays. I’ve told her that when I’m a famous writer I will commission her for a nude painting. Like before I die, this will happen. I’m so happy to support her on Patreon. Check out her shop, especially her “intimate” and “The Ladies of Covid” collections.
The random
New therapist, new general practice provider, new gynecologist... Crafting your life story, chock full of intimate details, for healthcare professionals in blunt and humorous ways.
My orthodontist used a mini rotary saw to create spaces in between my teeth to allow further movement for the second half of my Invisalign treatment. Flossing into the abyss.
I paid off my credit card from my poor-lady-in-between-jobs season. Now that money goes into the boob fund and home remodeling fund and new (to me) car fund (the oldest turns 16 later this year) and student loan fund and on and on. Matthew, speak to me:
And with that, the clearance section at Ross is a good go-to when shopping for erotic art festival attire.
Happy birthday!!
Happy Belated Birthday, I know it was awesome because of who you are.
